Munblunko segmented character conclusion

Segmented Character conclusions

Throughout my first few module’s I have gone through a number of different processes to get to my current method, I started off on flash trying to create segmented characters and animate them frame by frame, but this method was to time consuming and difficult.

Plus it was half way through animating that I realized I could edit the anchor point’s of my character body parts to create joint’s etc., after starting the whole thing again I then realized that it still take’s a lot of time, but I believe I have found a final idea that will work which has the same outcome but used a different programme.

What I have done is created my figures in segmented parts in flash spread them out, took a screen shot and then pasted them into Photoshop made an alpha channel and but each piece on different layers, I shall then add this to after effects and re assemble it on there.

S.W.O.T - Drawing techniques and current projects

Strengths

My strengths lie very deeply within Flash CS 5.5 I find it a lot easier than doing traditional hand drawn animation and the fact that lines smooth themselves out which is very convenient saying as my line work isn’t always the best,
Rotor Scoping is a skill which I have developed from past project’s when I have added a video file to my timeline on Flash and traced over each frame, to create an over all pretty much realistic anematic, I developed this skill from Tracing picture’s or tracing over piece’s of work that people have already made and then tweaking and editing them with my on unique style and flavor.

I would like to involve some stop motion in my current project for a scene where the demons come to get munblunko, I have worked with stop motion before at my old college I made a 2 minute animation of an action man swinging from rope’s skating walls and I even yellow screened a fight scene in there, so as you can see I have some experience in the field

Weakness

I have trouble with proportioning hand drawn animation but I think that is just because It take’s me to long to draw each frame unless I have pictures as reference(Rotor scoping as I mentioned earlier), 3D Animation is not a part of my animating vocabulary at all, the last animated 3D project I did was a robot on lightwave at my old college which basically fell over and broke into piece’s, it wasn’t that visually great either, I just created a box and added picture texture’s to everything to try and make it look more realistic, I must set myself the task of creating a 3D animation when I next get the chance, another point I would like to add is about my Line work, I prefer to use flash as it’s a vector based programme which mean’s when I draw a line it will automatically smooth it out for me, which is handy because when it come’s to hand drawn animation my line work is terrible, and lack’s consistency.

Evaluation of both

Looking at both my strengths and weakness’s together like this has shed a new light on my animating exploit’s, I have decided that on my next project I will be using 3D or traditional animation, even perhaps some stop motion as I mentioned in my strengths section, this should help to also shave some time off my animation, i may not pursue this, but this is what i believe shall work for now.

E stingers little red riding hood

E4 Stinger – Little red riding hood

The first esting I watched by myself was this one, it is a red riding hood sketch with a twist and I love how quirky and well drawn the characters are also how the wolf gets kicked in the junk by red riding hood, also I like how they put an E4 cookie on the wolfs tongue as the reveal at the end I thought that was very clever and ingenuative .

African Demon Conclusion

My African demon conclusion

For obvious reasons I was not allowed to call my demon character Dee Mareewanna Demon, so I have decided to name him after an African demon called the TIKOLOSHE.

Tikoloshe(Tokoloshe)

Tikoloshe (or Tokoloshe) is an evil-spirited gremlin in Zulu mythology. A shaman may send a Tikoloshe to vex his enemies, causing anything from harmless fright to illness or death. Tikoloshes are described as short hairy humanoid figures that can render themselves invisible by swallowing a pebble - all the better to sneak up on their victims.

Conclusion

I have chosen this demon because I believe his description best fits the characteristics of my character, and since there are no real pictures of this creature I can twist the description to fit my own needs, also on the illustration above it features some very creepy long finger’s with sharp nail’s which I think shall be encorporated into my demon.

I have also created my own tweaked urban myth for my character :

Tikoloshe(Tokoloshe)

Tikoloshe (or Tokoloshe) is an evil-spirited gremlin of African mythology. Tikoloshe are drawn to the like’s of dissobediant children and trouble makers, they have also been known to take the form of many earthbound speciesTikoloshes are described as short fat hairy handed figures that can render themselves invisible by swallowing a cookie - all the better to sneak up on their victims.
