How i created my Rasta Kaleidoscope

Rasta Kaleidoscope

ImageIn this document i'm going to tell you how I created my rasta kaleidoscope animation, it was really quite by accident that it happened, I was trying to create another version of my low poly shape composition, but ended up creating something much much better.
(Situated above, screen shot of my kaleidoscope animation)

  • First to create my low poly shape I first followed a tutorial by grey scale gorilla, (link shall be posted below to view that)

  • I then selected a mirror tool from the Mo-graph menu on C4D, after fiddling around with the  mirror effects I lined my identical shapes up to form one big shape.

  • After creating my shape I tried rotating it into it's symmetrical copy and it made some pretty crazy shapes, I then decided to mess with other settings and axis variations.

  •  It wasn't until I recorded an animation using both the move tool and the rotate tool that I realised that when the two mirrored shapes are clashed into and straight through each other while connecting, it results in an outburst of patterns being formed and looking quite Fantastic if I do say so myself

Long Time No Blog ! Progress and recap weeks 3 - 4 & 5

Adventure's so far - Progress & Improvement

Its been a long time since i last posted on my blog, so here is a little look into what i've been doing, basically since the last time i Blogged i started and am close to finishing production of my 3 minute animation, "The Adventure's Of Munblunko"

This is my Friend Zuki, it is his likeness that is being used for my character, so technically Zuki is Munblunko, (you may notice that with the 3 identical pic's below i have used the same face, this was my emotion tester, i wanted to see which emotions i could create just by changing eye brow position and even eye and mouth shape.

This is the head of my Witch Doctor, he has a moving mouth eyes and a swirling head piece, you will have to check out my work to see that though, one of my favorite characters though.
This is a screen shot of my segmented character to be animated most likely in after effects using the puppet tool, as  tried to create it in flash professional using the bone tool, but that didn't go down so well at all, so i split all the parts onto separate layers and they are awaiting pinning.

You may have noticed that this image is very similar to the set of 3 down below, this is because it was traced from the same picture but i simplified the design, gave it a simple colour scheme, no shadows and simply drawn facial features/ body parts, i have done a lot of this changing and simplifying during the project, and it has proven to be rather useful.

I have also started a new project for a company called Digital Cinema Media, in which i have to choose 3 emotions that are felt when you go to see a movie, Then depending on the chosen feeling create different kinds of strange 3D animated effects and composite them into The Given logo (Below) we have also been asked to have video footage which we shall edit and stabilize, although we can do the opposite and composite video into the logo, then use the animation as a background image if desired.

Tahiti Boy and the palm tree family

Tahiti boy and the palmtree family 1973

Tahiti boy and the palm tree family was definitely not created in 1973, but it is a beautiful piece of animation none the less, and I love the fact that not only have they added actual animated 2D characters, but they have also tracked mouths onto the palm tree’s to make them sing etc.

Image

I also loved this Forrest scene where they have either stood behind trees or composited their arms into the scene to make it look as if the tree’s are alive.

Image

I also like how the band have placed their faces withing this Giant sun/ face, which moves all over the place, blinks and opens this mouth The whole way through.

Image

The animation is very simple yet effective, for example this little guy here just bob’s from side to side and I believe he was created on after effects using the puppet pinning tool.

Image

This final scene is a zoom out of all the action that is going on,  it looks very very monty python but It probably took half the time, and was all done on a computer, not to sure about some of the illustrations though, they could  be drawn and scanned in.

Frog to Cadillac - metamorphosis

Metamorphosis – Evaluation

Overall I believe my animation went pretty bad I didn’t execute enough of the motions and movements that I wanted to add and I didn’t have time to complete it so I just made the best of a bad situation and tried using shape tween for the morph sequence but it ended up gong horribly wrong and I tried adding little explosions etc. to make it look better but I don’t think I achieved that, however my favorite part of my animation is the start bit where the frog catches the fly, it was the bit which I concentrated hardest on (which is obviously why its so much better than the rest of the animation.

Shape tweening

Shape tweening is a quick and easy way of morphing shapes on flash cs4 it has come in handy before but it really does have its limits.

The flaws of shape tweening

Shape tweening is really only a good thing to use if your morphing two shapes which are practically the same or the same size at least, however I used it to morph a frog to a Cadillac and it just mosaicked itself and re formed into the Cadillac in a way which looked majorly rubbish.

Max Fliescher - Koko's conquest

Max Fleischer - Kokos Conquest

Max fleischers animations were revolutionary, the only competition back in those days was walt disney and a few other companys, but fleischer wanted to be the best and in creating the first animated film with sound on it got him some edge and pushed his reputation as an animator to a higher level.

(First ever animated short with sound)

A Skanner Darkly

           A Skanner Darkly

Back Story
A skanner darkly is a film about a a cop in a not to distant future who gets involved with a dangerous new drug on the market, and begins to lose his own identity as a result, it is filmed in a mind blowing way.

How The animation / effects were created

The film was shot digitally and then animated using interpolated rotoscope, an animation technique in which animators trace over footage, frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films, over the original footage, giving it its distinctive animated look.

(Here are some screen shot's of the animation technique in action, i shall also be adding futher adaptation later today.)
